Oscar slap: Police were there to take Will Smith away

Will Smith (53) apparently owes it to Chris Rock (57) that he was able to receive his Oscar personally. Los Angeles police were on the scene during Sunday’s film awards ceremony and were ready to arrest the actor. He had punched Chris Rock in the face on stage.

The only reason the cops didn’t do anything was because Rock refused to press charges, Will Packer (47), the producer of the Oscar ceremony, said on the ABC show “Good Morning America”. According to excerpts from the interview, Packer said “bodily harm” was a word they were using at the time. “They said we’re going to get him. We’re ready to get him right now,” Packer added.

That had happened
During the live show, Smith came onto the Oscar stage from the audience after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife and slapped the comedian in the face. Less than an hour later, Will Smith delivered a tearful acceptance speech onstage as he accepted the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in King Richard.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Packer said police were discussing options with Chris Rock. However, the comedian rejected everything and said that he was fine.

Rock had made a joke about Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith (50), before the slap. Rock joked that Pinkett Smith is probably preparing for the sequel to The Jane Files. An obvious nod to the actress having her head shaved. The 1997 film starred Demi Moore (59) with her hair shaved off. Jada Pinkett Smith has long suffered from a disease-related hair loss, alopecia, which she made public in 2018.

Sorry only after a day
In his acceptance speech, Will Smith then apologized to the Academy and the other nominees, but not to Chris Rock. The actor caught up on this a day later on Instagram.

The Oscar winner published a post on Monday. “Violence in all its forms is poisonous and destructive,” Will Smith wrote in it. “My behavior at the Oscars last night was unacceptable and inexcusable.”

“Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s health was too much for me and I reacted emotionally,” Will Smith explained in the post. “I want to apologize to you publicly, Chris. I was wrong and I was wrong.” He was embarrassed, said the 53-year-old. His actions didn’t reflect the man he wants to be. “In a world of love and kindness there is no room for violence.”

Smith also apologized again to the Oscar Academy, the show’s producers, the people watching both in person and at home, and the people who worked with him on the movie King Richard. In the end, he explained in the Instagram post that he still had a lot to work on.

The Oscar Academy has now initiated disciplinary proceedings against the actor. Smith could now face a suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.

Oscar winner Jared Leto doesn’t watch his own films

Oscar-Preisträger Jared Leto (AFP/Oscar DEL POZO) (Oscar DEL POZO)

Oscar-winner Jared Leto hasn’t watched one of his critically acclaimed films in decades. “I never look at them,” Leto said in an interview with news agency AFP. The last film he saw on screen was Requiem for a Dream at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000.

Leto said it was crucial for an actor to be unbiased and unaware of himself. “So I’m doing everything I can not to think about myself from the outside,” said the 50-year-old. “That way, I never repeat myself.”

Leto now wants to prove his versatility in his first leading role in a blockbuster. In the Marvel film “Morbius” he plays the scientist Michael Morbius, who suffers from a disease that turns him into a vampire.

For him, this film is “something new and different – I like big, funny popcorn films“. But Leto doesn’t want to switch forever, as he told AFP. The Marvel role could “help pay the bills,” after which he could play in other productions again.

Leto became known in the mid-90s through the US series “Welcome to Life”. He later starred in the war film “The Thin Red Line”, the psychological thriller “Fight Club” and the film “American Psycho”. He won the 2014 Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as an AIDS-stricken transsexual in Dallas Buyers Club.

No group photo?
Mainly vegan dishes were served again this year. This was introduced for the first time in 2020. The Academy would like to use it to show efforts towards more sustainability and climate protection, with the aim of becoming CO2-neutral.

Usually, a group photo is taken with the nominees at the traditional Oscars lunch. However, the Academy had already announced in advance that the picture would not be available this year. Instead, the nominees were individually photographed upon arrival. The Academy then wants to put together a group photo from the recordings.

‘Bestia’, the macabre Chilean story that is nominated for an Oscar

Chilean director Hugo Covarrubias in his studio in Santiago (AFP/MARTIN BERNETTI) (MARTIN BERNETTI)

“Bestia”, the Chilean short film nominated for an Oscar, is based on the life of Ingrid Olderöck, an agent of the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet who dedicated herself to “violating the soul” of women torturing them with trained dogs, its director told AFP. , Hugo Covarrubias.

With the nomination in the category of best animated short, “Bestia” is the thirteenth Chilean production to reach this level in Hollywood.

Before that, it won the Clermont-Ferrand festival, the most important in short films; the Annecy International Animation Festival and the Guadalajara International Film Festival.

Question: Who was Ingrid Olderöck?

Answer: “She was a person who incarnated evil and reigned in Chile during the dictatorship. She is an element who worked for the dictatorship’s spheres of power. As a woman, she performed a task that was to train women to torture women.”

“A person who is dedicated to violating souls like her obviously must have had her soul violated at some point. Olderöck had a lot of mental deviations, she was a very paranoid, traumatized woman who was constantly trying to validate herself.”

Q: What is the role of Olderöck’s dog in the short film?

A: “In the short, one of the aspects we wanted to address is the intimate relationship with her dog. She had three dogs, but in the short we ‘dramatized’ this part because we wanted to show the most important dog, Volodia, and little by little it is revealed what she does with the dog”. “In reality, what she did was train dogs to commit torture, mainly to rape women.”

Q: Why did you decide to shoot in Stop Motion format?

A:”I’ve been working on this technique since 2005, it’s basically what I know how to do. We like it because there’s a plastic, manual and analog component that allows us to generate worlds that would be very difficult to create digitally. We use miniature scales made of cardboard and 25 centimeter characters made of articulated steel, fabric and polyurethane”.

Q: Why do you think Bestia managed to win over overseas audiences?

A: “Bestia stands out for its theme, for its aesthetics, for the way in which this political theme is worked. Also for its genre, a psychological and political thriller that ended up being a very different short from the others, which doesn’t end with a happy ending; in this sense is also different from the rest, it’s quite raw and powerful”.

Q. What does an Oscar nomination mean to you?

A: “Being nominated for an Oscar is very important because it gives your film more credibility and obviously opens doors for a career as a film director and for the team. But the most important thing is the subject that is being talked about and the people who suffered this type of harassment”.

This means that the Oscars will have consistent moderation for the first time since 2018. It’s also the first time since 1987 that there will be three hosts – and the first time ever that the role will be filled by three women.

“I’m not sure who thought it was a good idea, but I’m going to be hosting the Oscars with my friends Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall,” Schumer said in a video aired on ABC. “I’d better watch some movies.”

The last Oscar host was comedian and TV presenter Jimmy Kimmel in 2018. After that, the Oscar organizers decided not to have a moderator for the ceremony. Rather, numerous celebrities appeared to announce individual program items.

The new format was initially well received and was also copied at other galas, but then came under more and more criticism because a clear line and often humor were missing.

The Oscars have lost dramatically in TV viewers in recent years. Only around ten million people watched the ceremony last year – less than half of the TV viewers of 2020.

Critics attribute the falling ratings, among other things, to the fact that films that have attracted many viewers to the cinemas have not been well received by the members of the Oscar Academy in recent years. In addition, the awards themselves were attested to have a lack of entertainment value.

On Monday, the Oscar organizers announced the introduction of an audience award where film fans can vote online. This is also an attempt to increase interest in the film award again.

The 94th Oscars will be presented on March 27th at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. The dark western “The Power of the Dog” by director Jane Campion with Benedict Cumberbatch in the leading role has twelve and thus the most nominations in the race for the most coveted film award in the world.

Canadian director Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic “Dune” received ten nominations, while Kenneth Branagh’s Northern Ireland drama “Belfast” and Steven Spielberg’s musical remake “West Side Story” received seven nominations each.
