“Road House” with the best start in Prime platform history

Amazon boasted about the viewership results of “Road House” on Prime. The conglomerate claims that no film in the platform’s history has had such a successful start.

Millions watched “Road House” on Prime

“Road House” is a remake of the film “Road House” with Patrick Swayze. The new version was directed by Doug Liman, with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role. The film skipped theaters and went straight to the Prime platform. Its premiere was on the first day of spring, March 21.

Amazon claims that globally no film in the history of the Prime platform has had a better debut. It is so good that for the first time in history, Amazon has released viewership data. Since its premiere, “Road House” has already garnered 50 million views.

However, Amazon did not specify how it defines viewership. Currently, both Netflix and Disney+ define viewership as the total time a title is watched by all platform users divided by the total duration. In the past, a popular indicator was counting the number of accounts that “watched” the film, with just one minute being enough to count towards the statistics.

About the movie “Road House”

The new film is a loose remake of the original from 1989. The main character, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, is a former UFC fighter who works as a bouncer at a nightclub in Florida. Upon arrival, he discovers that he has stumbled into a den of crime, corruption, and violence. And he will have to clean it up. The cast also includes Billy Magnussen (“No Time to Die”) and Daniela Melchior (“The Suicide Squad”).

Work on the new “Road House” has been ongoing for nearly two decades. A few years ago, MGM planned to entrust the titular role to UFC champion Ronda Rousey. Later, the studio’s plans changed several times until the studio itself changed. The screenplay for the latest version was written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. Behind the camera of the production described by the producers as “big, entertaining cinema for everyone” is Doug Liman (“Edge of Tomorrow,” “The Bourne Identity”).
